Cataract FAQs

If you have blurry vision or trouble seeing at night, it may be due to cataracts. At Eye Group, located inside Madison HealthPlex Performance Center, we provide comprehensive eye exams to learn more about your condition and treatment to help you see clearly. Before visiting us, take a look at some frequently asked questions regarding cataracts below:

What Are Cataracts?

A cataract is a clouding of the natural lens in your eye, which leads to blurry or hazy vision. Most cataracts develop slowly, but trauma, certain medications, and health issues can accelerate changes. They are extremely common, impacting most people by age 80. Cataracts themselves are not painful, but impaired vision can greatly impact your quality of life.

What Causes Cataracts?

Aging is the most common cause of cataracts, however, they can also develop due to genetics, UV light exposure, smoking, and diabetes. The proteins that make up your eye’s lens begin to break down and clump together, slowly worsening the clarity of vision over time. When these changes are detected early, it allows cataracts to be monitored or easily treated.

When Is Surgery Necessary?

Our ophthalmologist may initially recommend prescription changes, anti-glare glasses, or increased lighting to help you see clearly. When the cataracts are significantly impacting your daily activities, we might suggest surgery. During the procedure, the cloudy lens is removed and replaced with an artificial lens to improve your eyesight.

How Long Does It Take to Recover from Surgery?

Cataract surgery is an outpatient procedure with rapid recovery. You’ll return home the same day to rest. Your vision should improve within a week, however, you may experience some blurriness, light sensitivity or dryness as you heal. The discomfort is usually mild and can be managed with over-the-counter medication. Additionally, you vision will continue to sharpen as healing occurs.
