If you are planning on having eye surgery in the near future, there are some general things that you should know about. Our Madison ophthalmology clinic has years of experience in cataract surgery, LASIK surgery, and many others.
Many of our patients also have a lot of questions. While our office will always take the time to answer any questions you may have, there are a few questions that everyone should know the answer to before they start a surgical procedure.
Always be clear about what the pre-op instructions are for your surgical procedure. It is rare that our office uses total sedation for a procedure, which means that instructions about not eating or drinking are rare. We will often warn against wearing contact lenses or participating in activities that frequently result in scratched eyes. It is also common to prescribe eye drops or other medications that need to be taken before a surgery. Make sure that you know the schedule to take these medications.
Because you probably won't be unconscious during your eye surgery, there may be things that you have to be able to do. Typically, this may involve lying still or focusing on a spot. If you have physical issues that prevent you from carrying out any of these tasks, let the doctor know before the surgery starts.
Write down exactly what you need to do after your surgery. This way you or your caretaker can refer back to the directions if needed.
