Orthokeratology (Ortho-k)
There are several ways to improve vision, and if you're looking for non-surgical options, you may be a candidate for orthokeratology.
Eye Group can give you the information you need to make a knowledgeable decision about ortho-k and whether it's right for you. We're located inside Madison Health Plex Performance Center and are here to help. Read below to understand how ortho-k can help.
What Is Orthokeratology?
Orthokeratology is a non-surgical treatment involving specially fitted contact lenses to reshape your cornea. These lenses are worn overnight while sleeping, and you take them out in the morning before you start your day. Most patients wear lenses every night, because you’ll get used to them, and they won't disturb sleep.
How Does Ortho-k Treatment Help?
Ortho-k treatment can reshape your cornea to help adjust the spot where the light hits the back of your eye. This adjustment brings everything into sharper focus. Getting the maximum benefit from the lenses may take a few days of ortho-k treatment. When you take the lenses out in the morning, your eyes will hold the new shape for hours and often for the entire day.
Some people lose the benefit of ortho-k when it gets near their bedtime or if they stay up later than usual, but many people have shaper vision when they have their lenses out. That's especially true after wearing them, as your eyes adjust. If you stop wearing your lenses every night, your eyes will return to where they were before the ortho-k treatment.
Is Everyone a Candidate for Ortho-k?
Not everyone qualifies for ortho-k treatment, although most can wear these lenses. You may not be a candidate if you have eye health issues or misshapen corneas. For most people who want non-surgical vision correction, our ophthalmologist can help explore orthokeratology.
