Some people think of LASIK surgery as a relatively new procedure and are surprised to learn it has been around for nearly 30 years. It is one of the most common types of eye surgery performed in ophthalmology offices. If you live in the Madison, MS, area, Eye Group is here to share what you can expect during LASIK surgery.
A typical surgery appointment is made for about two hours, but you'll spend less than 30 minutes of it actually in surgery. The appointment will begin with a brief eye exam to check your overall vision and eye health, followed by eye drops to numb the area and sometimes medication to keep you relaxed.
You will be awake during the whole procedure. Once the surgery is over, you'll spend about half an hour with the nurse or doctor before getting cleared to go home and rest.
During the surgery, you'll be asked to lie still and look toward a light or other object, but nothing else will be required of you. The surgeon will handle everything else, including ensuring you don't blink.
You will not feel any pain during the procedure, but you will be aware of what is going on around you. You may feel some pressure as instruments touch your eye. Typically surgery lasts about 20 to 30 minutes.
You must follow all of your doctor's instructions after the surgery. You will not be able to see well enough to drive or perform many other activities within the first several hours. For this reason, it's generally recommended that you go home and sleep for a while.
